Indispensable links to get the documentation about the new Microsoft and Adobe
OpenType format, after the similar attempt of Apple (QuickDraw GX). See below,
OpenType, and table (Adobe, Microsoft).
Macro FontLab 2.5 to create composite characters.
Composite characters are useful not only during the use of the font, but also
during its creation. On the other hand it is desirable that a font does not
include composite characters during metric adjustments on basis characters.
Note that FontLab 3, which allows to automate operations, or to do complex transformations
by combining already available transormation actions (a bit like Fontographer,
but a lot better), no longer integrates the LIFO (Last In First Out) macro language,
which was included in the version 2.5. FontLab4 will again include this feature
(see http://www.fontlab.com/). The version
2.5 is therefore still very useful. More
about this macro.
A demo of FontLab 3.0 is available
since October 30th 1997. This demo has been replaced by the release 3.00A February
6th 1998. At the end of the month, the definitive version has been sent to its
buyers. Current full version is release 3.00E. See also the FontLab
Developers group web page (http://www.fontlab.com/), by Yuri Yarmola. Pyrus
FontLab is always the best editor of Type 1 fonts, and is now also a TrueType
fonts native editor, that implements the difficult technique of delta hints,
like Microsoft Visual
TrueType, or Type Solutions
StingRay and TypeMan.
What does the Fontographer team mean about it, and about Fog5?
Fontographer versus TypeDesigner. This document answers the
very critical point of view about Fontographer, of several reports, namely Kendrick
Digital Typography, Laurence Penney, TrueType Typography, http://www.truetype.demon.co.uk/,
that stresses TypeDesigner qualities. Moreover, some technical aspect of Type
1 and TrueType formats. This article was written before the first demo version
available on the Pyrus site.

This page shows the ways to have the main documents relating to the technical aspects of the fonts. Links and address given here are all at the bottom of the page. If your browser support the "frames", it's advantageous to use the index which is at the top left. It's only at the bottom of the page that you'll find the links you need for the expansion and the visualization of the documents.
Here is how to have access to some official documents, which present a more or less interest with digital typography.
You will particularly take care of the volume Text (html, pdf ,or DocViewer with index), and especially the chapter 4, "Font Manager"(html, or pdf with Table of Contents), where it speaks about the different typographic resources of the Macintosh. For the TrueType fonts, you must look the reference book, TrueType Font Format Specification, that you can't find on internet, but you can ask it at the APDA (Apple Programmers and Developers Association). But you can also substitute it the official documentation (see below).
Apple has recently created a html page in which the firm propose an online reference manual with the html format, TrueType Reference Manual, a documentation about the quality demands for the GX fonts, QuickDraw GX Font Quality Specification, powerful TrueType natives tools to download (especially RoyalT and TrueEdit).
